07/27/10 HSA Records Best Team Performance at Southeasterns
In a meet that included some amazing individual performances, the HSA team as a whole ended up being the shining star. HSA swimmers swam to 81% best times in the meet, which was 8% better than any other team in the meet. The team was led in these endeavors by Cameron Conners, Valerie Nubbe, and Phil Deaton. Cameron achieved his first Summer National cut in the 100 breast, on his way to smashing Tyler Kaliszak's Senior Men's team record of 1:06.76 from 2007. Cameron broke the record by over two seconds, swimming to a time of 1:04.67. That time currently ranks him 4th in the nation among 18 year old men. Cameron also made the Summer National B cut in the 200 breast, while on his way to breaking another HSA Record. Cameron's time of 2:23.77 broke Gary Petmecky's Senior Men's Record of 2:28.19 from 1983 by almost 5 seconds.
Both Valerie Nubbe and Phil Deaton also made new short course Junior National Cuts. Valerie made her cut in the 50 free, while Phil made the 100 back cut. Valerie's 50 free swim was also a team record. Her time of 27.08 broke Emily Wang's record of 27.47 in 1998. Valerie and Phil also both made the Southeastern Swimming All-Star Zone Team.
The record breaking was continued by Luke Kaliszak, Chloe Hui, and George Wong. Luke's time of 1:02.42 in the 13-14 boys 100 fly broke Randy Roberts' record of 1:04.04 from 1974. Chloe broke Jeannie Nadolski's 11-12 girls 50 free record of 29.05 from 1985 by swimming to a time of 28.92. George's time of 24.06 bettered Keith Martin's Senior Men's 50 free record 24.23 from 1988.
The records breaking weren't limited to just individual events either. The Senior Men and 13-14 men both broke 400 medley relay team records over the course of the meet. The Senior Men's team of Phil Deaton, Cameron Conners, Tyler Espy, and George Wong broke the time of 4:05.17 from 1982 by a whopping 7 seconds, swimming to a time of 3:58.23. Not to be outdone, the 13-14 men's team of Luke Kaliszak, Szymmy Day, Chandler Espy, and Jared Sutphin broke the relay of S.Griffin, B. Morris, R. Esnault, and R. Scrip's record of 4:26.65 by swimming to a time of 4:23.96. The Senior boys time ranks them 3rd in the nation currently, and the 13-14 boys is ranked 33rd.
Overall, the team ended up 7th at the meet! This was an 11 point improvement over last year's 18th place finish. Swimmer's from top to bottom had a ton of success. That is reflected in the amount of new stepping stone cuts. Those swimmers were:
Gold: Cameron Conners
Silver: Sarah Margaret Cimino, Phil Deaton, Chandler Espy, Macon Graves, Alison Hu, Chloe Hui, Luke Kaliszak, McKenzie Mokry, Sara Neil, Valerie Nubbe, Liz Olson, Mallory Underwood, and George Wong
Bronze: Hannah Busk, Maya Day, Szymmy Day, Tyler Espy, Joe Hinely, Brad Hollihan, Emily Vasquez, and Sam Vasquez
SEQT: Kevin Byrne and Jared Sutphin
Huntsville swimmers will finish their year with both the Zone Championships in Atlanta, GA and the USA Swimming Junior National Championships in Irvine, CA.
